Mythological background

Bhaga is one of the Adityas, the solar sons of the goddess Aditi and the sage Kashyapa, a family of luminous deities who uphold cosmic and social order. His very name means 'the dispenser' or 'apportioner', for it is Bhaga who allots to each being their rightful share of fortune, wealth and happiness. The Sanskrit word bhagya, meaning destiny or good luck, and the honorific Bhagavan, 'the fortunate one' or Lord, both descend from his name.

In the Rigveda Bhaga is invoked at dawn alongside his brothers as a bestower of riches and blessings, the one who makes people prosperous and glad. He is closely paired with Aryaman and other Adityas, and together they guard the bonds of marriage, friendship and the wider social fabric. Bhaga's gift is not merely gold but the capacity to relish it - the delight, ease and marital joy that make prosperity worth having.

A well-known myth links Bhaga to Daksha's great sacrifice, which Shiva's fury disrupted after Sati's death. In the upheaval the fierce Virabhadra is said to have blinded Bhaga, so that in some accounts the god of fortune is described as sightless - a reminder that fortune is famously blind in how it distributes its gifts.

Symbolism

Bhaga symbolises the enjoyable side of life: the wealth that brings comfort, the union that brings love, and the leisure in which one savours the harvest of one's labour. He stands for the marriage bed, the hearth, the festive table and the blossoming of desire fulfilled. Under his influence effort ripens into reward.

His deeper symbolism is that of the fair share. Bhaga apportions to each their due, teaching that abundance is not seized but received, and that the truest riches are those enjoyed in the company of a beloved and offered generously to others.

Devotees invoke Bhaga for happy marriages, marital harmony, fertility, wealth and the enjoyment of life's blessings. He is remembered in Vedic hymns to the Adityas recited at dawn, and his energy is felt especially in rites and celebrations surrounding union, romance and prosperity. Prayers to Bhaga ask not only for fortune but for the wisdom and warmth to delight in it and share it well.
