Raksha Bandhan

The Rakhi Ceremony

On Raksha Bandhan, sisters perform a traditional aarti, apply a tilak on their brothers' foreheads, tie a beautifully decorated rakhi around their wrists, and pray for their health, happiness, and prosperity.

In return, brothers offer gifts and reaffirm their commitment to protect and support their sisters throughout life. Today, the festival is also celebrated among cousins, close friends, and even those who share a bond of mutual respect and affection.

Stories Behind Raksha Bandhan

Several legends are associated with the festival.

One popular story tells of Lord Krishna and Draupadi. When Krishna injured his finger, Draupadi tore a strip from her sari and tied it around the wound. Deeply moved by her gesture, Krishna promised to protect her whenever she needed him. This promise was fulfilled during the episode of her disrobing in the Mahabharata.

Another well-known tradition recalls Yama, the god of death, and his sister Yamuna. It is said that Yamuna tied a sacred thread around Yama's wrist, and in return he granted her a boon that anyone who observed the festival with sincerity would receive long life and divine blessings.
