A hora is a planetary hour. The Hindu day from sunrise to next sunrise is divided into 24 horas, each ruled by one of the seven planets - Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. Choosing a hora whose ruling planet suits your task is the simplest form of electional timing.
The first hora of the day is ruled by that weekday's own planet - Sun on Sunday, Moon on Monday, Mars on Tuesday, and so on - after which the planets follow the fixed Chaldean order (Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon) hour after hour. Daytime horas run one-twelfth of the day and night horas one-twelfth of the night, so they are not exactly 60 minutes.
Jupiter (Guru) hora is considered the most auspicious - good for ceremonies, learning and wealth. Venus, Mercury and Moon horas are also benefic; the Sun hora is mixed; and Mars and Saturn horas are generally avoided for gentle or auspicious work.
