Akshaya Tritiya - 'Akshaya' meaning never-diminishing - is one of the most auspicious days of the Hindu year. Any charity, worship, investment or new beginning undertaken today is believed to yield undying, ever-growing merit. It is a swayamsiddha or 'abujh' muhurat, an auspicious day needing no separate muhurat check, so the whole day is favourable for buying gold, property, weddings and starting ventures. The Abhijit window at solar noon is its natural peak.
The day joins abundance (Lakshmi–Kubera), righteousness (Parashurama, Vishnu) and inexhaustible merit - deeds done today, especially charity, are believed to multiply and never diminish. Its 'abujh' character makes it universally auspicious for anything begun with good intent.

Many sacred events are placed on this Tritiya. It is held to be the day the Treta Yuga began, and the birthday of Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu. On this day the sage Vyasa is said to have begun dictating the Mahabharata to Ganesha, and the river Ganga descended from heaven to the earth. It is also when Kubera, worshipping Lakshmi, received the treasures and the office of the treasurer of the gods - which is why Lakshmi–Kubera worship for wealth is central to the day. Other traditions recall Krishna filling Draupadi's Akshaya Patra so it never emptied, and gifting his poor friend Sudama endless prosperity, reinforcing the theme of inexhaustible abundance.
