Significance
Ram Navami celebrates the birth of Lord Rama, the seventh avatar of Vishnu and the ideal king (Maryada Purushottam). He was born at noon on Chaitra Shukla Navami, and so the Madhyahna (midday) window is the day's central muhurat, when the birth (Ram Janma) is enacted with the rocking of a cradle. It is the culmination of the nine days of Chaitra Navratri.
Rama's birth marks the triumph of dharma over adharma and the arrival of an avatar to restore order. Worship on this day, especially the midday Ram Janma, is believed to bestow virtue, protection and the fulfilment of righteous desires.
To welcome Lord Rama at his birth-hour, to honour the ideals of dharma and righteous conduct he embodies, and to complete the fast and worship of Chaitra Navratri.
The story
King Dasharatha of Ayodhya, long without an heir, performed the Putrakameshti Yajna on the advice of the sage Rishyasringa. From the sacrificial fire arose a divine payasam, which his queens partook of; in time Queen Kausalya bore Rama, while Kaikeyi and Sumitra bore Bharata, Lakshmana and Shatrughna. Rama was born at midday in the Punarvasu nakshatra, during the Abhijit muhurat, with the Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn all exalted - an alignment read as the descent of Vishnu himself to rid the earth of the demon-king Ravana. His life, told in Valmiki's Ramayana, became the Hindu model of dharma, duty and righteous kingship.
