The eighth day of Chaitra (Vasanta) Navratri is dedicated to Mahagauri, the dazzlingly fair and serene form of the Goddess who bestows peace, purity and the forgiveness of past sins. Many households mark it with Kanya Pujan, the worship of young girls as living embodiments of the Goddess. Coming on the eve of Ram Navami, the day cleanses body, speech and mind for the culmination of the nine nights in Lord Rama's birth on Navami.

Her worship seeks peace of mind, the forgiveness of past errors, and a purity that steadies the devotee for the culmination of the nine nights. Mahagauri is luminously fair, calm and radiant, clad in white or the day's colour; four-armed, she rides a bull and holds a trident and a damaru, her remaining hands in the gestures of blessing and fearlessness. Her name and complexion carry a story: after Parvati performed such severe penance to win Shiva that her body darkened, Shiva bathed her in the sacred Ganga, and she emerged dazzlingly white and luminous - Mahagauri, the Great Fair One. She is serenity itself, and her worship is said to wash away every impurity of body, speech and mind. So great is her grace that she is believed to forgive even the accumulated sins of past lives, granting the devotee a clean and peaceful heart. Her seed mantra is 'ॐ देवी महागौर्यै नमः'.
After Parvati's severe penance darkened her body, Shiva bathed her in the Ganga and she emerged dazzlingly luminous - Mahagauri, radiant and pure.
The worship of young girls (and often a young boy as Batuk Bhairav) as living forms of the Goddess: their feet are washed, they are fed a special meal and given gifts. It is a central Ashtami / Navami observance.
Coconut is her traditional bhog, offered and then shared as prasad; her seed mantra 'ॐ देवी महागौर्यै नमः' is chanted as japa for purity and peace.
