Significance

Importance

The ninth and final day of Chaitra (Vasanta) Navratri is Ram Navami - the birth of Lord Rama at Madhyahna (midday) on Chaitra Shukla Navami. The day belongs to Siddhidatri, who bestows the eight siddhis and every perfection and completes the sadhana of the nine nights. Chaitra Navratri culminates not in Dussehra but in Ram Janma: the nine days lead up to Rama's birth, and the devotee breaks the nine-day fast after the midday worship. Siddhidatri's grace seals the fruits of the sadhana even as the whole household celebrates the arrival of Rama.

Religious significance

Siddhidatri represents the completion and fruit of sadhana - the state where discipline blossoms into attainment. Her worship seeks fulfilment of purpose, the perfection of one's practice and the removal of ignorance, so that both worldly aims and spiritual liberation are within reach. She is the culmination toward which the whole of Navratri moves.

Why it is celebrated

To seek fulfilment, perfection and the fruits of the nine-night sadhana, and to honour Maha Navami with the concluding Havan and the Kanya Pujan feast.

The story

Siddhidatri is serene and resplendent, seated upon a full-blown lotus and served by a lion; four-armed, she holds a mace, a discus, a lotus and a conch. Worshipped by gods, sages, siddhas and asuras alike, she is the source of all attainment: it is said that Shiva himself won his powers by her grace, and that from her half of Shiva's being became Ardhanarishvara. She bestows the eight great siddhis - anima, mahima, garima, laghima, prapti, prakamya, ishitva and vashitva - and every worldly and spiritual perfection the devotee is ready to receive. On her day the long discipline of the nine nights ripens into fulfilment. Her seed mantra is 'ॐ देवी सिद्धिदात्र्यै नमः'.

Who celebratesHindu households, temples and sadhaks across India, and seekers of siddhi who revere her as the giver of all attainment.
Where observedKept pan-India as Ram Navami, with especially strong observance across North and West India, Maharashtra and the Deccan and among Rama devotees; Chaitra Navratri closes on this ninth day with the midday Ram Janma.

Why is the ninth day of Chaitra Navratri called Ram Navami?

Chaitra Shukla Navami is the birth-tithi of Lord Rama, who was born at Madhyahna (midday). The ninth night's Siddhidatri worship coincides with Ram Navami, and Chaitra Navratri culminates in the celebration of Ram Janma.

What bhog is offered to Siddhidatri?

Sesame (til) is her traditional bhog; the Ram Navami table typically adds panakam, sundal and festive prasad. Her seed mantra 'ॐ देवी सिद्धिदात्र्यै नमः' is chanted as japa for fulfilment.

When is the Chaitra Navratri fast broken?

After the midday Ram Janma worship on Navami. The nine-day fast completes with Ram Navami, once the birth of Lord Rama has been celebrated in the Madhyahna window.
