Significance
The eighth day, Durga Ashtami or Maha Ashtami, is among the most significant of the entire Navratri. It is dedicated to Mahagauri, the dazzlingly fair and serene form of the Goddess who bestows peace, purity and the forgiveness of past sins. The day is marked by Sandhi Puja at the Ashtami-Navami junction and by Kanya Pujan, the worship of young girls as living embodiments of the Goddess. For many households the Navratri fast culminates today.
Mahagauri embodies purity attained through penance and grace - the soul cleansed and made radiant. Her worship seeks peace of mind, the forgiveness of past errors, and a purity that steadies the devotee for the culmination of the nine nights. She reminds us that even a darkened soul can be made luminous again.
To seek purity, peace and the forgiveness of past sins, and to honour Durga Ashtami - the day of Sandhi Puja and the worship of young girls as the Goddess.
The story
Mahagauri is luminously fair, calm and radiant, clad in white or the day's colour; four-armed, she rides a bull and holds a trident and a damaru, her remaining hands in the gestures of blessing and fearlessness. Her name and complexion carry a story: after Parvati performed such severe penance to win Shiva that her body darkened, Shiva bathed her in the sacred Ganga, and she emerged dazzlingly white and luminous - Mahagauri, the Great Fair One. She is serenity itself, and her worship is said to wash away every impurity of body, speech and mind. So great is her grace that she is believed to forgive even the accumulated sins of past lives, granting the devotee a clean and peaceful heart. Her seed mantra is 'ॐ देवी महागौर्यै नमः'.

- Across the north and west, Ashtami (or Navami) is the chief day for Kanya Pujan / Kanjak, when young girls and a young boy (as Batuk Bhairav) are fed and gifted.
- In many homes the nine-day fast is concluded on Ashtami with the Kanya Pujan feast.
Special notes
- In a tithi-vriddhi or kshaya year the exact Durga Ashtami / Maha Navami date can differ from this ordinal day; follow your local Panchang for the Sandhi Puja and Havan timing.
- Mahagauri's grace is held to forgive even the sins of past lives - her worship is as much about inner peace as outward ritual.
