The season
Vasanta, spring, is the first of the six ritus, spanning the lunar months of Chaitra and Vaishakha (roughly mid-March to mid-May). It opens the Hindu lunar year and carries some of its most auspicious days for new beginnings.
Vasanta is the gentle season of renewal: the cold has gone, the heat of summer has not yet come, and the land bursts into blossom. Held the most pleasant of the six, it is called ritu-raja, the king of seasons.
Ritucharya - the seasonal regimen
As spring stirs the kapha accumulated over winter, the classical regimen favours light, warm, easily digested food, honey, barley and older grains, brisk exercise and less daytime sleep. Heavy, cold, oily, sweet and sour foods are eased off.
Festivals of Vasanta
Gudi Padwa / Ugadi (the Hindu new year), Chaitra Navratri, Ram Navami, Hanuman Jayanti, Akshaya Tritiya and Buddha Purnima.
