Frequently asked questions

What is a Panchang?

A Panchang is the traditional Hindu calendar and almanac. Based on the positions of the Sun and Moon, it provides the five essential elements - Tithi, Vara, Nakshatra, Yoga, and Karana - to determine festivals, rituals, Muhurtas, and other auspicious timings.

How do I read a day in the Panchang?

Each day cell shows, from top to bottom: the Gregorian (civil) date, the Hindu lunar month such as Ashadha, the Tithi (the lunar day, shown as the largest line - Shukla means the waxing fortnight and Krishna the waning), the Nakshatra (the Moon's mansion at sunrise, one of 27), and any festivals or vrats as small colour-coded chips. All values are read at local sunrise for your city, so a Tithi (which lasts about 20 to 26 hours) may occasionally be skipped (tagged Kshaya) or repeated (tagged Vriddhi) - this is correct, not an error.
